MTV Shuga’s “Let's Be Honest” Follows a Teen Searching for Answers in All the Wrong Places

Let's Be Honest, the latest short film from MTV Shuga, explores the difficult but necessary conversations many families struggle to have about relationships, sex, and growing up.

The Nigerian short film centres on 16-year-old Anita, a teenager determined to take a major step in her relationship with her boyfriend, Tobi. Lacking guidance and open communication at home, Anita turns to her friends for advice, eventually deciding to purchase contraceptives. However, her plans are interrupted when her mother discovers the situation before she leaves the house, triggering an emotional confrontation that forces both mother and daughter to address years of silence, fear, and unresolved personal experiences.

As the story unfolds, the film moves beyond teenage curiosity into a deeper conversation about parenting, generational trauma, and the importance of honest communication within families. Rather than approaching these themes with heavy-handed drama, “Let’s Be Honest” balances emotional tension with humour and warmth, creating a relatable and engaging viewing experience.

Performances from Hilda Egbuna, Uche Chika, and Chioma Edak help ground the story, allowing moments of lightness to coexist naturally with the film’s more serious themes.

The project was developed through the MTV Shuga Shorts Innovation Lab, an initiative by the MTV Staying Alive Foundation aimed at empowering emerging storytellers and producing socially conscious short films that resonate with young audiences.

Running for just under 18 minutes, “Let’s Be Honest” delivers a concise yet impactful narrative that encourages more open conversations about topics often considered uncomfortable or taboo.
