Police Arrest Two Suspected Vandals at Accident Scene in Akwa Ibom

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State have arrested two suspected vandals linked to the theft of items from an accidented truck along the Calabar–Itu Highway.

According to a statement issued in Uyo on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the suspects were apprehended on Sunday at Afaha community after officers responded to credible intelligence about ongoing looting at the crash site.

The truck was said to have fallen into a valley along the highway, after which individuals allegedly began vandalising and stealing its contents.

One of the suspects, 19-year-old Adamu Hamza from Maiduguri, Borno State, was arrested at the scene with four suspected stolen truck tyres. In a follow-up operation, police also apprehended Anthony James, a tricycle operator allegedly used to transport the stolen items away from the location.

The statement confirmed that the arrests were made after officers swiftly mobilised to the scene following a tip-off from a tricycle rider who reported suspicious activity.

Both suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue to identify and arrest other accomplices believed to have fled the scene.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, condemned the act, warning against the looting of accident scenes and reiterating the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and enhanced surveillance across the state.

He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, while encouraging the public to remain law-abiding and security conscious.
