Flooding: Lagos intensifies drainage maintenance, desilting exercises

Local Government Areas in Lagos State has began intensifying drainage maintenance and desilting exercises as part of efforts to prevent flooding and ensure a cleaner environment.

The council chairman of Mushin Local Government area, Mr. Tunbosun Aruwe, during an assessment of major highways and inner roads in Mushin on Thursday, spoke about the importance of such maintenance.

Aruwe said regular drainage maintenance remained a key component of the council’s environmental protection agenda.
He said the operation focused on the removal of concrete slabs and the desilting of heavily silted and blocked tertiary drainage channels along Igun/Gbadamosi Street in Itire, Mushin.

He said the exercise was being carried out in conjunction with the council’s accredited service provider.
Aruwe said the aim was to restore the free flow of stormwater.

The chairman said the exercise would also reduce the risk of flooding and promote a healthier and cleaner environment for residents.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to proactive environmental sanitation. The chairman urged residents, especially traders, to support the initiative by disposing of waste responsibly. He also urged them to refrain from dumping refuse into drainage channels.

According to him, collective responsibility is essential to maintaining a flood-free and environmentally sustainable Mushin.

The heavy rainfall has left many parts of Lagos flooded, disrupting traffic and affecting residential communities. Among the worst-hit areas were Oshodi, Opeki Road in Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Abesan Estate and Ilupeju Road. Others include Mushin, Fashoro Street in Surulere, Akowonjo Road in Egbeda, Agege, Ikeja, Alimosho, Obalende, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Gbagada Expressway and Idi-Oro.
