Nafisat, the estranged wife of Nollywood actor Akin Olaiya, has alleged that domestic violence and mistreatment led to the collapse of their marriage.
Speaking in a viral video shared on Wednesday, Nafisat confirmed that she and the actor have been separated for several months, revealing that she left the marriage shortly after their wedding due to what she described as an abusive and unhealthy relationship.
According to her, she endured emotional pain and felt undervalued during the marriage, making it impossible for her to remain in the union.
“A few months ago, I left my marriage because I was in pain and felt mistreated. I felt like I did not matter. Nobody should remain in a home where violence exists,” she said.
Addressing public reactions surrounding reports of their divorce, Nafisat stated that the couple had actually been apart since last year, contrary to claims suggesting she abruptly left the marriage without any reason.
She explained that there were underlying issues in the relationship that were not known to the public and insisted that her decision to leave was not made lightly.
“For those asking how a wife could simply pack her things and leave, there were circumstances people do not know about. There was violence, and there were serious issues in the marriage,” she added.
Nafisat also noted that despite the significant age difference between her and the actor, she had expected greater understanding and support from him as her husband.
While alleging mistreatment, she maintained that she would not disclose every detail of their marital challenges on social media, saying she preferred to keep certain aspects of the relationship private.
“The age gap between us is considerable, but things were not going well. However, I will never come online to reveal all the issues we had in our marriage. That is something I will not do,” she stated.
She said her intention was simply to correct what she described as misleading assumptions surrounding their separation, stressing that no one would leave a marriage without serious reasons.
As of the time of filing this report, Akin Olaiya has not publicly responded to the allegations.
