Another group of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa has arrived in Lagos as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing effort to bring citizens home amid growing concerns over anti-immigrant protests in the country.
The Air Peace flight carrying about 271 returnees landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, shortly before 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Officials from relevant government agencies were on hand to receive the passengers upon arrival.
The latest evacuation comes as Nigerian authorities continue to monitor the situation in South Africa, where recent demonstrations and tensions involving foreign nationals have raised safety concerns.
The Federal Government had earlier announced plans to assist Nigerians willing to return home, following reports of unrest and uncertainty in some parts of the country.
Many of the returnees were said to have expressed relief at arriving safely in Nigeria after days of anxiety over the developments in South Africa. The evacuation programme is being coordinated through diplomatic and government channels to ensure that affected citizens are transported back home in an orderly manner.
This latest batch follows previous evacuations carried out by the government as part of efforts to protect Nigerians abroad. Authorities have assured citizens that measures are being taken to support the returnees and help them settle back into life in Nigeria.
The Federal Government has also continued to engage South African authorities on the welfare and security of Nigerians living in the country. Officials say discussions are ongoing to address concerns arising from the protests and to ensure that the rights of foreign nationals are respected.
More Nigerians are expected to return in the coming days as the evacuation exercise continues.
Government agencies have pledged to provide necessary assistance to those affected while monitoring developments closely.
Further details are expected from the Federal Government and relevant authorities regarding the next phase of the evacuation programme and additional support for the returnees.
