Court Finds Former Power Minister Mamman Guilty in N33.8bn Fraud Case

A Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted former Power Minister Saleh Mamman on 12 counts of fraud and money laundering filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Justice James Omotosho ruled that the prosecution provided overwhelming evidence showing that Mamman illegally diverted about ₦33.8 billion meant for the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power projects during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The court also found that he used cash payments outside the banking system to acquire luxury properties in Abuja, while large sums were allegedly moved through Bureau de Change operators. The judge criticized the former minister for failing to improve Nigeria’s power sector despite holding a key office.

Mamman was absent during the judgment, prompting the EFCC to seek a warrant for his arrest, while sentencing was postponed to a later date.
