Rice Prices Surge as NBS Reports Broad Increase in Food Costs Across Nigeria
The National Bureau of Statistics says the average price of 50kg local rice (short grain) rose by 20.5% in March 2026, reaching ₦112,000 from ₦92,946 in February.
In its latest Selected Food Price Watch report, the NBS also revealed that the price of imported rice increased by 3.06% to ₦133,975 within the same period.
Beyond rice, several staple foods recorded steady price hikes. Eggs rose by 2%, brown beans increased by 1.41%, white garri climbed by 1.38%, onion prices went up by 1.59%, while fresh ginger recorded a 0.61% increase.
The report also showed significant price differences across states, with items like eggs, beans, garri, and onions varying widely depending on location.
Overall, the data highlights continued pressure on food prices, though some market reports suggest local variations in rice prices may differ from national averages.
