The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reportedly filed a fresh lawsuit against Nigerian authorities over the issuance of fuel import licences.

According to reports, the refinery argues that continued importation of fuel could negatively affect local refining operations and discourage investment in domestic production.

The legal battle is expected to spark fresh debate about Nigeria’s fuel market and the future of local refining in the country.

Nigeria’s inflation rate increased to 15.69% in April 2026, according to the latest figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

Experts say the rise in inflation continues to affect food prices, transportation costs, and household expenses across the country. Many Nigerians have expressed concerns about the increasing cost of living as economic pressure grows.

Analysts believe the government may introduce additional measures to stabilize prices and improve purchasing power in the coming months.

The Nigerian naira has recorded another drop against the US dollar in the parallel market amid ongoing pressure on the country’s foreign exchange system.

Currency traders say demand for dollars remains high while supply continues to fluctuate. Economists warn that the unstable exchange rate could affect prices of goods and services nationwide.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is facing growing internal tension ahead of the 2027 elections as petitions from aggrieved aspirants and stakeholders continue to delay the release of the party’s screening report.

Among those reportedly cleared for the primaries are Hope Uzodimma, Siminalayi Fubara, and former Oyo State Secretary to the Government, Sarafadeen Alli.

Party insiders disclosed that the APC screened nearly 3,000 aspirants contesting for various positions, including the presidency, governorships, National Assembly seats, and state assembly positions, as part of preparations to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable for the 2027 polls.

Although the party had earlier scheduled May 13 for the release of the list of cleared aspirants, the report was yet to be made public as of late Tuesday night due to numerous petitions filed against some aspirants.

A senior APC source revealed that several screening panels received multiple complaints requiring careful review before the final report could be released.

Despite speculation surrounding the eligibility of Governor Fubara, party officials denied reports that any serving governor had been disqualified.

“No governor has been booted out. The party has always supported its governors. Some of them, like Uzodimma, got automatic clearance,” a source said.

The APC leadership is also reportedly pushing for consensus arrangements in several states to avoid post-primary disputes and possible court battles. However, resistance from some aspirants has complicated the process.

In Oyo State, controversy continues to surround the governorship race. While Sarafadeen Alli has reportedly secured party backing, former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu is said to be facing challenges that could affect his clearance.

Meanwhile, tensions in Ogun State deepened after the state government accused Senator Gbenga Daniel of attacking the same consensus arrangement that allegedly helped him secure his senatorial ticket in 2023.

The administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun dismissed Daniel’s criticisms as politically motivated, accusing the former governor of turning against the party structure after suffering setbacks ahead of the 2027 race.

Daniel’s camp, however, rejected claims that his emergence was based solely on consensus, insisting he won a competitive delegate primary by a landslide margin.

In Oyo, several APC governorship aspirants also warned against any attempt to impose a candidate ahead of the party primaries. The aspirants maintained that while they were open to consensus arrangements, the process must remain transparent and democratic.

The political uncertainty has also triggered heightened security measures in Ondo State, where Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa agreed to adopt direct primaries following pressure from the APC National Working Committee.

Ahead of the exercise, the Ondo State Police Command has launched show-of-force operations across parts of the state to prevent violence, voter intimidation, and other security threats linked to the primaries.

As internal negotiations continue, the APC faces mounting pressure to balance consensus politics with demands for transparency and fairness ahead of one of the party’s.

At the 2026 AMVCA Cultural Night in Lagos, Bisola Aiyeola delivered one of the evening’s most artistic fashion moments with a striking look titled “Mmiri Ndu,” meaning “Water of Life.”

Designed by KGZ Opulence Couture, the sculptural ensemble transformed fashion into visual storytelling, drawing inspiration from waterfalls, nature, and traditional Igbo symbolism.

The gown’s standout feature was a dramatic stream of vivid blue silk cascading from the neckline down the centre of the dress, carefully layered to mimic flowing water. Rather than appearing stiff or overly structured, the fabric moved in soft folds that created the illusion of an actual waterfall in motion.

At the hem, the blue silk blended into textured white detailing designed to resemble foamy water gathering along a riverbank. The cloud-like finish added depth and movement, making the lower half of the gown feel almost alive.

Creative director Kingsley Okoye Rex approached the outfit as more than just a red carpet look. Together with KGZ Opulence Couture, the vision recreated an entire natural landscape through fashion. Brown and moss-green sculptural accents curved around the skirt like rocks, bark, and surrounding foliage, giving the gown the appearance of a living environment rather than a conventional dress.

Adding a strong cultural element to the look were layers of traditional coral beads draped across Bisola’s shoulders and chest. The bold coral detailing contrasted beautifully with the fluidity of the blue silk while adding structure and regality to the silhouette. Her towering beaded updo completed the look, drawing attention upward and reinforcing the royal-inspired aesthetic.

From the textured hemline to the sculpted hips and carefully layered coral pieces, every detail worked together to bring the “Mmiri Ndu” concept to life. The result was a breathtaking fusion of fashion, culture, and art that stood out as one of the most memorable looks of the night.

What began as a playful moment on stage turned into one of the most memorable highlights of the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards for actress Uche Montana.

Earlier in the evening, while presenting an award at the AMVCAs held at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Uche jokingly launched into a mock acceptance speech, thanking God, her family, and supporters as the audience laughed along. The lighthearted moment quickly became a talking point across the event.

Little did she know that the joke would soon become reality.

Moments later, the actress returned to the stage after being announced as the winner of the prestigious Trailblazer Award — a special AMVCA honour reserved for rising talents who have made a significant impact on African film and television within a short period.

Clearly overwhelmed by the unexpected win, Uche struggled to hold back her emotions as she accepted the award.

“I’m still trying to find words… I’m shaking. Earlier today, I was standing here joking and giving a fake speech, and now… wow,” she said.

She went on to thank everyone who had supported her journey, describing the recognition as an “incredible honour” and encouraging young dreamers to keep believing in themselves despite challenges.

The emotional victory marked a defining moment in her growing Nollywood career and further cemented her reputation as one of the industry’s most promising stars.

Beyond the award itself, Uche also commanded attention with her striking red-and-gold custom gown designed by Tubo and styled by Dahmola. Inspired by the phoenix, the dramatic feathered look became one of the standout fashion statements of the night.

From a fake acceptance speech to a real standing ovation, Uche Montana’s AMVCA moment proved that sometimes, life truly imitates art.

The Nigerian Army on Monday deployed heavy armoured vehicles and armed personnel to Filling Polo in Maiduguri, the planned venue for a protest against rising insecurity and abductions in Borno State.

When reporters visited the area around 9:35 a.m., the venue was largely empty, with only a few suspected organisers and onlookers observing the situation from a distance amid growing tension over a possible confrontation.

The protest, which was expected to draw attention to worsening insecurity in the state, was later postponed following the heavy security presence.

Speaking to journalists, the leader of the organising group and President of the Borno South Youth Alliance, Samaila Kaigama, alleged that the deployment of troops was intended to intimidate peaceful demonstrators.

He claimed the state government was behind the security build-up, which he said discouraged many participants, including individuals who reportedly travelled from Ngoshe to join the protest.

According to him, the organisers have since engaged legal counsel and will resubmit notification letters to relevant authorities, including security agencies, before rescheduling the demonstration.

Kaigama confirmed that the protest had been suspended for the time being, adding that the group would comply with official procedures while continuing to advocate for affected families.

He said the demonstration was planned to highlight rising cases of kidnappings and insecurity, alleging that hundreds of people had been abducted in different parts of the state.

He further expressed frustration over what he described as slow government response to the crisis, insisting that affected communities have continued to suffer while seeking assistance.

Attempts to reach the spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, were unsuccessful as calls were not answered.

However, the Special Adviser to the Borno State Governor on Security Matters, Brig. Gen. Abdullahi Sabi Ishaq (retd.), stated that there are established procedures for organising protests in the state.

He said organisers are required to obtain clearance from the police before any public demonstration can hold, warning that otherwise lawful protests could be hijacked by criminals.

He added that while citizens have the right to express grievances, such actions must follow due process to maintain public order and prevent unrest.

The father of former Ilebaye Odiniya, Emmanuel Odiniya, has spoken out over the viral incident involving his daughter, alleging that he was provoked before a physical confrontation that left members of the family injured.

In a voice note shared on Facebook and widely circulated online, Odiniya claimed the situation was not born out of hatred but from frustration over what he described as a change in his daughter’s behaviour following her rise to fame after winning Big Brother Naija All Stars.

He insisted that he played a significant role in her victory, stating that he mobilised support, including influential contacts, during her time in the reality show.

According to him, their relationship reportedly became strained after her win, as he alleged that she became disrespectful and increasingly distant.

He also accused the reality star of ignoring his attempts to communicate, claiming she often refused to meet him despite arranging multiple appointments on her behalf.

Odiniya further criticised aspects of her lifestyle choices, including alleged cosmetic procedures, saying he had advised her against them due to her age.

In the voice note, he also alleged previous instances of physical altercations, claiming that he had been assaulted by her on earlier occasions.

Speaking about the most recent incident, he alleged that the confrontation escalated after she first insulted and attacked him, leading to injuries on both sides.

He also accused her of financial neglect, claiming she declined to assist him with medical treatment abroad despite his health condition, while referencing her public displays of wealth at social events.

Additionally, he alleged that she had influenced her younger brother negatively and interfered in family matters, including his marriage.

Despite his claims, Odiniya maintained that he still loves his daughter and expressed a desire for reconciliation, adding that law enforcement authorities had already intervened.

The incident reportedly left members of the family injured and required medical attention. The Nigeria Police Force in the Federal Capital Territory confirmed that all parties involved were receiving treatment, while investigations into the matter continue.

The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State has intensified security operations in Akure ahead of the official visit of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is expected to inaugurate the Onyearugbulem Flyover project executed under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration.

The Vice President is also scheduled to visit Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti at his residence as part of activities marking his 100th birthday celebration.

Speaking on the security arrangements, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abayomi Jimoh told the News Agency of Nigeria that a comprehensive security architecture had been deployed to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free visit.

He said the command had put in place “watertight” measures to guarantee the safety of the Vice President, the centenarian celebrant, and all guests attending the events.

According to him, the deployment includes personnel from the Police Mobile Force (PMF), tactical units, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) squad, strategically positioned across key locations in Akure.

He added that the aim is to prevent any security breach and ensure a smooth and orderly celebration.

Meanwhile, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Amotekun Corps were also seen deployed along major roads leading to Fasoranti’s residence to support crowd control and traffic management.

The Onyearugbulem Flyover, which is set to be commissioned during the visit, was originally flagged off in July 2023 by the late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The Federal Government has declared that any admission carried out outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) is illegal, warning that tertiary institutions that violate approved procedures will face strict sanctions.

The Minister of Education, Maruf Alausa, issued the warning on Monday during the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Abuja, stating that all admissions must strictly pass through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) CAPS platform.

He emphasised that institutions operating parallel or unapproved admission processes would no longer have such admissions recognised by government authorities.

“Let me reiterate, without equivocation, that admissions conducted outside this framework are illegal and will not be recognised,” the minister said.

Alausa warned that institutions attempting to bypass the system risk serious consequences, adding that the era of irregular admission practices must come to an end.

“The era in which institutions operated parallel admission systems, often to the detriment of deserving candidates, must come to an end,” he said.

He further stressed that the Federal Government would not tolerate any breach of admission guidelines, noting that erring institutions would be held accountable.

“I have resisted many attempts at condoning illegality in the admissions process. I will not be a party to such actions,” he stated.

According to him, sanctions for violations could include regulatory action and, in severe cases, suspension of operating licences for affected institutions.

“Any institution found to have conducted admissions outside the CAPS will be held accountable, and appropriate sanctions shall be applied without hesitation,” he added.

Alausa explained that the policy was aimed at restoring credibility and order in the tertiary education system, not to punish institutions unnecessarily.

On admission age, the minister reaffirmed that 16 years remains the minimum entry age into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, following consultations and policy reviews.

He noted that while provisions exist for exceptionally gifted candidates, such cases must follow clearly defined and strictly enforced guidelines.

The minister also highlighted ongoing reforms in the education sector, including improved support for persons with disabilities and the introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to ease financial barriers for students.

He further urged tertiary institutions to embrace transparency by publishing key operational data, including enrolment figures and financial allocations.

Alausa also stressed the importance of digitalisation, accountability, and stricter measures against examination malpractice as part of broader efforts to strengthen the education system.

He called on stakeholders to focus on implementation rather than policy formulation alone, warning that reforms would only succeed if properly enforced.

“The decisions we take here will have far-reaching implications for millions of young Nigerians,” he said, before formally declaring the meeting open.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State have arrested two suspected vandals linked to the theft of items from an accidented truck along the Calabar–Itu Highway.

According to a statement issued in Uyo on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the suspects were apprehended on Sunday at Afaha community after officers responded to credible intelligence about ongoing looting at the crash site.

The truck was said to have fallen into a valley along the highway, after which individuals allegedly began vandalising and stealing its contents.

One of the suspects, 19-year-old Adamu Hamza from Maiduguri, Borno State, was arrested at the scene with four suspected stolen truck tyres. In a follow-up operation, police also apprehended Anthony James, a tricycle operator allegedly used to transport the stolen items away from the location.

The statement confirmed that the arrests were made after officers swiftly mobilised to the scene following a tip-off from a tricycle rider who reported suspicious activity.

Both suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue to identify and arrest other accomplices believed to have fled the scene.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, condemned the act, warning against the looting of accident scenes and reiterating the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and enhanced surveillance across the state.

He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, while encouraging the public to remain law-abiding and security conscious.
